Reduced fees for trademark registration in the EU
29 April 2009

The European Commission has decided to cut costs of registering trademarks in the EU. As of 1 May 2009, the registration fee for a Community trademark (CTM) will be abolished and the registration process simplified when filing a CTM with OHIM (the main authority responsible for granting EU-wide trademark rights).

The abolition of the fee means that it will become cheaper and easier for companies operating across EU markets to protect their trademarks. With effect from 1 May 2009, the total official fees for filing a CTM will almost be halved, as the price for an online application will reduce from the current €1,600 to €900.

Both the EU Commission and the OHIM believe that the reduction in fees will benefit many small businesses in Europe which find the costs of protecting their trademarks too high.
